No New M4: A Bumblebees Plea

Today is World Wetlands Day, and I cannot stop thinking about the fact that whilst we are celebrating and cherishing these amazing places to visit, that South Wales’ very own wetland haven is threatened with destruction. This year the Welsh Government are voting to rip up the Gwent Levels, all for 10 minutes less spent in a car. This is our last chance to inform ourselves, and to fight for the future of our environment. Time to get angry South Wales. Plans for an M4 relief road diverting traffic from Chepstow, around Newport, and into Cardiff, have been rumbling around for years, but the issue is now at crisis point as…

7 Affordable Ways To Go Green in 2019

2019 is the year we go green! In 2018 climate change headlines, mass extinctions, rainforest loss and image of plastic choking our oceans dominated the media. Sometimes it feels like we are all hopeless against the monster corporations which push this greedy pillaging of our natural resources. That’s how they want us to feel. For too long environmentally friendly options have been a middle/upper class affair; expensive hessian totes, fancy bamboo containers, organic vegetable boxes that cost more than your weekly shop. But now there are ways that everyone can get involved in an accessible and affordable green revolution! Here are my 7 goals for 2019 to make my year,…

Can You Put A Price On Wildlife?

Yet again it seems, that money is valued more than the future of our wildlife’s survival in this country. Recently, the RSPB have been campaigning to protect Coul Links, a unique habitat and one of the last of it’s kind in Scotland, against the threat of a luxury golf course. RSPB are backed by Scottish National Heritage, Buglife, Butterfly Conservation Scotland, Plantlife Scotland, the Marine Conservation Society, the National Trust for Scotland and the Scottish Wildlife Trust, and thousands of concerned members of the public (click here to help the campaign). But money talks, and local councillors have left the decision to the Scottish Government after failing to make their own decision based on the information put…

    #30DaysWild Day 2 – RSPB Swift Surveying

Day 2 of my 30 Days Wild and on the penultimate day of National Volunteer Week, I’ve decided it would be an apt time to write about my experience as a RSPB Swift Surveyor for Cardiff. It’s been a tricky task for a bird that faces an uncertain future, but I’ve learnt so much and I know it’ll be very rewarding at the end! Common Swifts are in serious decline, with their numbers between 1995 and 2015 plummeting by 51%, mainly due to the loss of suitable nesting sites and the decline of flying insects. When we seal up buildings and build new houses with no spaces or gaps for…

    Problem Plastic

The scourge of plastic is something often seen in a grander scale on the news; the devastating ‘plastic islands’ created in the oceans or the heartbreaking images of endangered wildlife snared by single use items. Only more recently have I started looking a bit closer to home, and the impact it has on us and our local environment, on our streets, in our parks and in our spaces for nature. This series of photos shows a Coot who had pulled up a plastic bag from a reed bed, and was pecking and ultimately trying to eat it. This was taken at the Wetlands Nature Reserve in Cardiff. It broke me.…

Get Involved: Barry Island 2 Minute Beach Clean

This week saw the launch of the 2 minute beach clean for my local sandy beach – Whitmore Bay at Barry Island. I’m so pleased to see a great positive action being taken on litter on a beach that’s accessible for so many people based in South East Wales. Not only will it have a positive impact here, it will hopefully impact on many other communities who follow suit, both with beaches and without. What is it? If you’ve not seen one of the boards before, they have a wealth of information on the benefits of doing the beach clean, and have gloves and litter pickers to make picking even…

    Get Involved: Seabirdwatch

Want to get involved in some citizen science to help protect our seabird colonies? Read on! Now, for regular viewers of BBC’s Spring/Autumn/Winterwatch shows, ‘Seabirdwatch’ might sound familiar. It was featured last year alongside a challenge to complete as many of the tasks on the site as possible, and is now 69% complete as of Jan 2018. But what is it and how can you get involved? The site hosted by ‘Zooniverse’ is set to easily guide the user to identify 2 different bird species in photos taken from camera traps placed at various sites around the North Atlantic – Skellig Michael off the west coast of Ireland, Rathin Island off…
