    Richmond Park Butterfly Walk

On a long hot summer day, most of us head for the shade, or the sea – or just avoid the whole thing all together. But where is the fun in that! I head out, camera in tow, to Richmond Park whilst I was staying in London, to see what I could find during the scorching heatwave in July. Butterfly Walk Starting at the car park by Pembroke Lodge, the walk began along Queen Elizabeth’s plantation, which gave welcome relief in the form of shade from the relentless sun. Juvenile great tits scurried between branches whilst a jackdaw family bickered in an ancient, hollowed tree. So there was life! Which…

    #30DaysWild Day 16 – Wildly Glastonbury

On day 16, I got up bright and early (well, 10 o clock, it was a Saturday, and lie ins are hard to come by with two rescue pets!), to make the most of Cardiff’s great location for travelling around the South West of the UK – and we set off to Glastonbury! After a quick research, I discovered the area was home to a wealth of nature reserves including Ham Wall and the Avalon marshes. But a gloomy, drizzly ‘rain mac’ day meant we decided to stay close to cover and explore the town and it’s natural spaces, which were plentiful enough to fill a day with. First stop…

    #30DaysWild Day 14/15 – Fledgling Friday

The last few evenings I popped over for a dog walk at Cosmeston Lakes – a local nature park just outside of Cardiff. You can really tell summer is on the way as the fledglings are outside of the nest flying after their parents and the wildflower is really kicking off in the wild verges. And yes, another multi day late post! It’s so hard to keep on top of posting every day but I’ve decided I’m not that mad about it as I’m having a great time! So keep an eye out for my late posts now! There were plenty of orchids about, little pink/purple spikes dotted through the daisies…

    #30DaysWild Day 13 – Moth Fields

There’s a great field in Tremorfa Park / Pengam Green in Cardiff which has a variety of scrub, long unkept grass, brambles and gorse – which seems to be the perfect place to spot a day flying moth or two! The fact it’s left to it’s own devices and not intervened with by the council has meant this area has gotten wild and unruly, and it’s distance from the main park means it swerves the problems that come with regular use from passersby. The variety of plants, not just long grass, means pollinators have a shot at making the area their home – unlike verges and other ‘wild’ areas which…

    #30DaysWild Day 8/9 – There’s Something in The Air

This weekend got off to a busy start, but Day 8 finished with a walk through my local park surrounded by butterflies, Cinnabar moths dancing, and common skipper moths standing their ground in prominent places waiting for their future partners- so I could record them! It was after a warm day following rain showers, so I’m assuming they appreciated the weather! Day 9 me and my girlfriend took a drive over to Parc Slip Nature Reserve which is just outside Bridgend, a 30ish minute drive from Cardiff. We went earlier in the day to avoid the heat but it soon warmed up to around 20 degrees pretty quickly! I had…

    Spring Tales From The Riverbank

The sun is finally fighting against the grey clouds which have been become part of the furniture of Cardiff’s skyline for the last few months, which means that spring is finally underway. And no snow to stop it this time! Nowhere does this show better than along the Forest Farm Nature Reserve in Radyr, North Cardiff. Sandwiched between the River Taff and the Glamorganshire Canal, it’s a haven for waders and wetland wildlife, as well as the flora and fauna who call the established woodlands it’s home. The sunshine has given everything who calls the reserve it’s home a renewed energy to get busy during the important spring season! Water Water…
